Scientists have made a new discovery which challenges previous understanding of the relationship between the Southern Ocean and carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Their findings show that, contrary to existing assumptions, the biological processes of phytoplankton further out to sea is the most important factor in how the ocean absorbs carbon dioxide.
